Israel – Religious School

Israel is woven deeply into the heart of our Religious School, speaking to our students’ minds, spirits, and evolving sense of Jewish identity. Across every grade, children and teens experience Israel not simply as a subject to learn about, but as a living, dynamic connection to our people, our history, our culture, and our homeland. Through joyful celebrations, meaningful conversations, creative expression, and authentic classroom experiences, students cultivate a personal and enduring relationship with Israel.

These connections are brought vividly to life by our dedicated teachers—many of whom are Israeli—as well as by our annual shinshinim, who share their stories, traditions, perspectives, and everyday experiences with warmth and authenticity. Israeli dance, music, and Hebrew language with our Israeli specialists infuse the school with energy and joy, facilitating a genuine connection to Israel that is deeply felt by our students. Our families are also encouraged to welcome the shinshinim into their homes for Shabbat dinners, creating opportunities for personal relationships and meaningful connection beyond the classroom. Whether through spirited Yom Ha’atzmaut celebrations, conversations about similarities and differences between life in Israel and the United States, or moments of spontaneous curiosity that arise during class, students are encouraged to discover what Israel means to them personally. Questions, reflection, and thoughtful dialogue are always embraced.

Throughout the year, students engage with Israel in memorable and age-appropriate ways. This year, each class designed and created its own Israeli flag to display proudly in the classroom—a beautiful example of how creativity can deepen connection and pride. Younger students also designed synagogues for Israeli communities as part of their “My Synagogue” unit, while our third graders explored Israel from ancient times through today, discovering its history, innovations, traditions, holidays, food, and cultural diversity.

By experiencing Israel through learning, celebration, creativity, relationships, and shared community, our students develop connections that are joyful, meaningful, and lasting.
