This is a combo class of art & music. Each session we’ll recreate a famous work of art using household items, then sing and dance our sillies out with Miss Patti on the guitar & ukulele! Parent participation encouraged

Dalcroze Eurythmics on Tuesdays@9:30 w/ Yuki Hiruma-Charlesworth

This music program for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten children is based on Dalcroze Eurhythmics founded by Emile Jacques-Dalcroze, a Swiss musician and educator. Children exercise and experience games which involve listening, singing, moving and improvisation.  They also play an assortment of percussion instruments.The music classes encourage development in focus, spatial awareness, gross motor, social, and improvisation skills as well as the ability to work with others.

Where the Wild Things Are: Personal Toy Theater Toy Theater on Thursdays@10:30 w/Sam Hack

Toy Theaters were traditionally made from paper and designed to be created and performed in Victorian living rooms, making them ideal for the homebound artist.  

Join puppeteer Sam Hack in making your own toy theater inspired by Jewish Author Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are.  Using materials such as boxes, paper and tape, we will create personal theaters and puppets each based on each students own ideas. What’s your wild place and who will you meet there?

Performance Club on Tuesdays@11 w/Naomi Graf 

This class is open to students in all the performing arts (music, theater, dance). “Try out” your performance for your peers and make new friends (even if your piece is “not quite ready”). Get more comfortable expressing yourself, sharing comments and supporting each other in this informal atmosphere.

Music Theory on Thursdays@3 w/Mairi Dorman-Phaneuf 

Let’s learn how to read music! From the notes and rhythms to key and time signatures, we’ll get familiar with recognizing what we see on the page. Together we’ll sing some scales, intervals and simple melodies, and clap the rhythmic patterns on the staff, and before you know it, you’ll understand how music is written down so it can be shared with others.

Music Theory, Intermediate on Mondays@5 w/Mairi Dorman-Phaneuf

This is a class designed to fill-in-the-gaps on reading music. Basic note reading is reviewed along with rhythmic patterns, followed by a comprehensive explanation of time signatures, key signatures, and key relationships. Will include additional tips on effective sight-reading.

“Don’t be nervous!” How many times have you heard someone say this before you had to get up in front of your friends and family to perform a well-learned piece on your instrument? In this class we’ll look at finding ways to accept and understand these fears, with the goal of moving past them to share our enjoyment of the music.

Basic improvisation on Wednesdays@3 w/Randy Andos

Many beginning players are fearful of improvising. They think they have to fill up all the silence with notes. I will demonstrate how to use a simple phrase and though slight changing of notes, and repetitions, a player can begin to improvise in a fun and melodic way. With chord changes, a player can take the notes of a triad for instance and by changing their order and by using simple rhythms, he or she can begin to make up their own music.

Is your dream to sing on a Broadway stage? Or perhaps you just love singing along to show-tunes in your bedroom. In this class, you will learn from a professional New York actor about auditioning, story-telling, and performance technique. Over the course of 4 weeks, you will perform songs of your choice, get feedback, and develop skills to be the best YOU on stage!

A Trombone Player’s Guide to Jazz on Mondays@4 w/Randy Andos

Each week Randy will take an iconic jazz track or album, featuring a legendary trombonist, and guide the listener through the recording — the musical techniques the player used, their choice of mutes, the styles of solos. Gain a deeper appreciation for the approach to rhythm and harmony taken by these jazz greats.

A class that combines an overview of Jazz history and critical listening; designed to deepen the understanding and appreciation of the art form. Each of the four weeks will focus on a decade from the 1930’s to the1960’s, highlighting just some of the legendary artists of the time.  A list will be created prior to class each week so you can become familiar with some of the great recordings ahead of each era and bring your questions to class!

No artistic experience or special materials needed. We will each create or sketch with whatever materials we have at home.

Ever wanted to know how the music of Broadway comes to be performed in the pit of your favorite show? Follow the path of a song from the first idea, to the out-of-town-tryout, to Opening and Closing nights. Learn how cast albums are made, and how sub musicians bounce from pit to pit. After seventeen years and seventeen Broadway chairs, Mairi will give you a backstage tour of the life of a Broadway musician, and invite some special friends to share their stories!

In this class, we will explore many of Western Music’s great composers in chronological order, and their most impactful contributions to the canon. Together we will listen, analyze and discuss classical music, revealing Mozart’s lovable insanity, how exactly Beethoven changed the world, why Brahms would be fun to hang out with, AND MORE!
